MEET OUR SPONSORS - Cavan Credit Union

In a time when financial services are increasingly digital, distant, and transactional, Cavan Credit Union continues to stand firmly on a different foundation: locality, participation, and community ownership. It is the reason that it remains, after decades of service, one of the most embedded and trusted organisations in the county.

At the centre of everything Cavan Credit Union does is a simple principle: local money for local people. It is a model that is often spoken about, but less often understood in its full significance.

When members save with Cavan Credit Union, their money does not disappear into distant markets or anonymous portfolios. Instead, it remains within the community, recycled in the form of loans, dividends, loan rebates, community sponsorships and educational events.

Loans taken out by our members are repaid and re-circulated, creating a sustainable local financial ecosystem that is both practical and profoundly communal in nature.

Alongside our savings and loan services, we are also encouraging more members to make the switch to our current accounts as part of their everyday banking. By choosing to manage your day-to-day finances locally – whether that’s your wages, bills, or daily spending – you are strengthening the same community-focused model that underpins everything we do. Every transaction, like all savings and loans, supports a system where money stays within the county and continues to benefit local people. It is a simple change that can make a meaningful difference, allowing members to play an even more active role in supporting their community through how they bank.

At the heart of the Community

Cavan Credit Union’s contribution to community life extends far beyond financial services. One of our most impactful mechanisms of support is our Social & Cultural Fund. Designed specifically to provide for social, cultural, and charitable purposes within the Cavan community, the fund ensures that members’ engagement with the credit union translates into tangible community benefit. In other words, when people borrow and save with the credit union, they are also, collectively, funding a wide range of local initiatives that enrich daily life across the county.

The reach of this fund is deliberately broad. From education and arts to sports and environmental projects, it’s purpose is not narrowly defined because the needs of a community are not narrow.

Recent examples illustrate this breadth in practice. Support has been provided to projects such as the Fairgreen Community Gardens development of their kitchen and tearoom – a space that brings people together across generations. Local Foróige clubs have benefited from assistance aimed at empowering young people through leadership and engagement. Charitable organisations including SOSAD, IWA, and CAPS have also been supported in their essential work within the Cavan community.

We are also proud to have supported cultural and creative initiatives that add richness and identity to local life, including The Cottage Market Cavan and Pothole Productions Cavan, both of which play an important role in fostering creativity, enterprise, and cultural engagement within our county.

Involved in Sporting life

In sport, Cavan Credit Union’s presence is equally visible. Contributions have gone to Cavan County Board and surrounding clubs, reinforcing the role of sport as a cornerstone of community identity and wellbeing. Local primary and secondary schools have also been assisted, recognising that education remains one of the most powerful long-term investments in any community.

However, if there is one aspect of the credit union model that is sometimes under appreciated, it is the role of volunteers. At the heart of every credit union is a governance structure built not on corporate appointment, but on member participation.

The Board of Directors is drawn directly from the membership itself – consisting of individuals who bring their unique skills, experience, and time voluntarily to guide and oversee the organisation.

Their contribution ensures that Cavan Credit Union remains grounded in the lived reality of our members. They shape strategy, safeguard sustainability, and ensure that decision-making remains accountable to the community it serves.

It is impossible, therefore, to speak about Cavan Credit Union’s role in the community without mentioning volunteerism itself. Its success is inseparable from the commitment of those who give their time without expectation of personal gain, motivated instead by a sense of civic duty and collective progress.

In many ways, the future health of rural and regional communities depends on the same principles that underpin the credit union movement: participation, reciprocity, and trust. Encouraging young people to volunteer, to lead, and to contribute is an investment in social infrastructure just as meaningful as any financial one. Young volunteers represent continuity—the next generation of community builders who will carry forward the traditions of service, engagement, and local pride. Recognising them is not only appropriate, it’s essential.
