Shining a light on our volunteers and sport stars

Excitement is mounting ahead of the year’s Cavan Community & Sport Awards in partnership with Mannok.

Twenty-seven finalists across eight categories will be honoured at the theatre-style event in the Cavan Crystal Hotel this afternoon.

The categories include Volunteer of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year (U18), Community Group of the Year, Green Project of the Year, Carer of the Year, Team of the Year, Young Sports Star of the Year and Outstanding Achievement Award.

The finalists come from many difficult clubs, organisations and parishes across County Cavan. From organising the Christmas lights, working behind the scenes in sport clubs to involvement in mental health initiatives, first responders, Tidy Towns and community gardens, the event weaves a wonderful tapestry of the benefits volunteering delivers for rural communities.

A wide variety of sports are also represented in the nominations from Gaelic games to basketball, athletics, soccer, rallying, handball, boxing and even Taekwondo.

A welcome inclusion are the categories of Young Volunteer of the Year and Young Sports Star of the Year - designed to reward commitment and dedication from a young age. Ellen Tinnelly will also receive a special award for PRO of the year for her efforts in promoting underage soccer; while boxing coach Brian McKeown will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The overall Community Champion and Sport Star of the Year will also be revealed.

It’s a proud event for The Anglo-Celt, which prides itself on being your community newspaper for 180 years now - going back to 1846. Having a trusted source of news makes for strong and connected communities and it’s important to recognise the great work that’s going on the length and breadth of our county at the grassroots.

Thanks to our partners Mannok and our sponsors - Cavan Crystal Hotel, Dovida, Kyte Powertech, Brady’s Kia & Skoda, CICO, Cavan Credit Union, ClubSpot and Axa. You are all invested in your communities and, without your support, staging these awards would not be possible.

Congratulations to all our finalists and do check out their profiles in the special supplement published at the centre of the print edition this week and on our website!
