€14.6M funding for Castleblayney Market House will see it reborn
A long-derelict landmark at the heart of Castleblayney is set to be brought back to life, as the €14.6 million regeneration project moves towards construction this summer.
The Castleblayney Market Square Regeneration Phase II Project will see the restoration and repurposing of the town’s historic Market House, alongside significant upgrades to the surrounding public realm.
Back in May 2024 the then Minister Heather Humphreys made this commitment, at the time she said: “This is a hugely significant investment for Castleblayney – seeing a project through to fruition that has been talked about and worked on for many years. I am glad to have worked very closely with Councillor Aidan Campbell on this project. This is all part of an investment of over €160 million under my Department’s Rural Regeneration and Development Fund – with Monaghan receiving one of the most substantial investments in the country.”
Dating from around 1790, the Market House was originally constructed by General Andrew Thomas Blayney, the 11th Baron Blayney, as a focal point for trade and civic activity. Extended in 1856 with the addition of a courthouse block, the building evolved into a central hub for market trading, legal proceedings, and local administration, later also accommodating the town library.
Despite its architectural and historical significance, including its designation as a Protected Structure, the building has remained vacant for more than 20 years, falling into a state of disrepair and contributing to a decline in the vibrancy of Market Square.
The regeneration project will transform the former Market House into a modern, multi-functional facility designed to meet contemporary community needs while respecting its historic character.
Planned uses include cultural and heritage spaces, retail and hospitality outlets, office accommodation, and associated support facilities. In tandem with the building works, the project will deliver extensive improvements to Market Square itself, enhancing accessibility, safety, and the overall public environment for residents, businesses, and visitors. Funded through the Government’s Rural Regeneration and Development Fund, with additional support from Monaghan County Council, the project aims to re-establish the Market House as a focal point for community life and economic activity.
The construction contract was awarded to Felix O’Hare & Co. Ltd., with works due to commence in the coming months. Once completed, the revitalised building and public space are expected to play a key role in strengthening Castleblayney’s town centre, creating new opportunities for cultural events, local enterprise, and community engagement while reconnecting the town with a central part of its heritage.
Speaking this week, Robert Burns, Chief Executive, Monaghan Co Council, said:
“This significant investment in Castleblayney reflects our ongoing commitment to regenerating our towns and strengthening local communities. The Market House is a landmark building of immense historic and civic importance, and its redevelopment will create a vibrant hub that supports cultural activity, enterprise, and social interaction. I am delighted to see this project move to construction stage and look forward to its positive impact on the town.”
Cathaoirleach of Monaghan Co Council Cllr PJ O’Hanlon added: “I very much welcome the progression of Phase II of the Market Square regeneration and the significant funding that has been secured for Castleblayney. This is an important project for the town, and it reflects ongoing collaboration between local representatives and national funding bodies in supporting the development of our town centres.”
Cathal Flynn, Director of Services, Monaghan County Council, said: “This project represents a strong example of what can be achieved through effective collaboration between national funding bodies, the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Monaghan County Council, and our elected members. Their continued support and shared vision have been instrumental in bringing this ambitious regeneration project to construction stage, ensuring a lasting positive impact for Castleblayney and its community.”
Fine Gael Councillor Aidan Campbell has also welcomed the latest development.
