Shercock's Marilyns take the plunge for a good cause
Five Shercock women were among the Marilyns who took to the sea at Donabate on Sunday for the Marilyn Mater Paddle in support of women’s cancer care.
“It was fantastic,” Pearl Dickson said, describing how it was “the most beautiful day you could have”.
Pearl took part in the event with her sister and cousins, and upon arrival they pulled on their Marilyn suits, wigs “and the whole shebang” before making their way to Balcarrick Beach where two DJs were blasting tunes.
After a quick dancing session and countdown they took to the water which “wasn’t even cold”.
“The craic was great,” she described.
It was the group’s first-time taking part in the event.
“My cousins and I tend to do a lot of fun stuff every now and again and we love dressing up. I don’t think I know anybody who hasn’t been affected by cancer so it was a great cause.”
Pearl’s mum has overcome breast cancer, and she knows she is “one of the lucky ones” .
The women will have their own fundraiser in Barney’s in Shercock tomorrow (Thursday) from 8-10:30pm. The Laragh-based Tales and Tunes group, of which Pearl is a member, will host a night of songs and storytelling.
“It’s a wonderful night. It’s storytelling and there’s usually a few musicians and just a good old sing song and a cup of tea.
“You come away feeling great.”
