€115k boost for Aughnamullen GFC
More than €115,000 in Government funding over two years has helped transform facilities at Aughnamullen Sarsfields GFC, with a new spectator stand and community gym officially opened by Minister for Rural and Community Development Dara Calleary.
The projects were supported through the CLÁR programme, with the south Monaghan club receiving €50,000 in 2024 and a further €65,000 in 2025. Significant additional funding from the club brought both developments to fruition.
Speaking at the official opening, club chairperson P.J. Markey described the funding as a “true gamechanger” for Aughnamullen Sarsfields and the wider community.
“These aren't just building projects,” he said. “Our new stand will ensure that our families, older supporters and visiting fans can enjoy our game safely and comfortably in any weather. Meanwhile, the new community gym will provide a modern accessible space for our players to train and for our wider community to stay fit, healthy and connected.”
The launch highlighted the club's role as a focal point for the local community, particularly during difficult times.
Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, Cllr P.J. O'Hanlon, recalled the community response following the death of local woman Chloe McGee and four friends in a road traffic collision in Co Louth last November.
“I remember coming down here to the pitch that particular night,” he said. “It was such a solemn occasion. You walked into the field and all you could see were candles.”
Minister Calleary said that spirit of togetherness was one of the club's defining strengths.
“This is a community in good days and in bad. This is a club in good days and in bad,” he said, paying tribute to the volunteers whose efforts sustain organisations such as Aughnamullen Sarsfields.
Cathaoirleach of Ballybay-Clones Municipal District Sinéad Flynn said the developments reflected local ambition and commitment.
“What stands out most is that these projects have been driven by the community itself,” she said. “The vision, effort and commitment shown by Aughnamullen Sarsfields GFC is something to be admired.”
Monaghan County Council Chief Executive Robert Burns also praised the club's leadership during Storm Éowyn, noting that Aughnamullen was among the first community hubs to open its doors to residents affected by widespread power and service outages.
The new facilities are expected to benefit players, supporters and community groups for years to come.
