Cootehill - ‘A town with huge potential’
As he approaches his first full year as a member of Cavan County Council, Aontú representative Adrian Rogers says the experience has been both rewarding and educational.
Cllr Rogers, who was co-opted in May 2025 in place of now Snator Sarah O'Reilly, reflected on his first 13 months in office, describing it as a steep learning curve but one that has deepened his understanding of the challenges facing communities in the Cootehill-Bailieborough Municipal District.
“You learn as you go along,” he says plainly, before adding:
“People are quick to let you know where the problems are, and that's important because it helps focus attention on the issues that need addressing.”
Among the most pressing concerns raised by residents are road infrastructure and housing.
Cllr Rogers welcomed recent funding allocations for Cavan's road network, but argues significantly greater investment is still needed, partiularly in Bailieborough-Cootehill - an area that supports substantial industrial activity.
The R191 Canningstown to Bailieborough Road only reopened last week having been closed to traffic since the end of last month due to a sinkhole forming near the junction with the R165 Cavan-Bailieboro Road. Incidents like that show why investment is so important, Cllr Rogers says.
Despite the challenges, Cllr Rogers highlights several positive developments, including the Active Travel Scheme planned for Station Road in Cootehill.
“There is great work being done by the council, but they can only do so much with the funding available,” he noted.
The area is also home to several major industries and employers, and Cllr Rogers emphasised the importance of supporting local business. He praised the resilience of owners and encouraged residents to continue shopping locally, and to support newly opened and existing cafés, restaurants and hospitality venues.
The councillor referenced the strong “community spirit” demonstrated during Cootehill's recent 300th anniversary celebrations, and also acknowledged the support shown to the likes of Seán's Diner, affected by a recent fire, following which local fundraising efforts reflected the determination of people to see the popular eatery recover and reopen.
Looking ahead, Cllr Rogers remains committed to advocating for greater investment in infrastructure, housing and economic develpment in Cootehill, while continuing to work closely with residents and community groups.
“Cootehill is a town with enormous potential, and I want to keep working to ensure that potential is realised.”
