Coyle takes the chair in Ballybay-Clones
Housing, roads and parking are issues top of Cllr Séamus Coyle's agenda as the Fianna Fáil man takes over as Cathaoirleach of the Ballybay/Clones Municipal District following an AGM this week.
He was nominated by Cllr Richard Truell (Fine Gael) and seconded by the outgoing Cathaoirleach, Cllr Sinead Flynn (Sinn Féin), who vacated the chair at the meeting in the Civic Offices in Clones on Monday, June 15.
Before stepping down, Cllr Flynn reflected on her year in office, describing it as a privilege to represent the district at home and abroad.
“A highlight was leading a delegation to Bavaria and welcoming the Burgermeister back to Ballybay (with which Gergweis, Osterhofen is twinned), to showcase the MD.”
She pointed to seasonal celebrations demonstrating strong local spirit and noted the recognition of voluntary efforts through the MD Community Awards night.
The launch of the Active Travel scheme in Lough Egish, the opening of Aughnamullen GFC’s spectator stand and gym, Ballybay Fire Station and the Newbliss DigiHub were among some of the events at which she officiated.
Cllr Flynn also welcomed progress on the Tier 4 Village Plan for Smithborough during her tenure and encouraged public engagement with the consultation process (scheduled for the village hall on Tuesday, June 30 at 7pm).
She thanked elected members, staff and constituents for their support, with councillors Truell, Treanor and Coyle praising her leadership. Apologies were received from Cllr Sean Gilliland, who was unable to attend the AGM.
District Coordinator Matthew Lambe oversaw the election process. On taking office, Cllr Coyle said he was honoured and outlined priorities including roads, housing and parking.
He welcomed the acquisition of Ballybay Market House, expressed support for regeneration plans for St Tiernach’s Quarter in Clones and hope for a new use for the former Ballybay Civic Building.
He also acknowledged ongoing development across the district and the importance of local media: “I was very sorry to see The Northern Standard close at the end of 2025, but The Anglo-Celt are doing a good job.”
Cllr Richard Truell was subsequently elected Leas-Cathaoirleach, with his nomination proposed and seconded by Sinn Féin councillors Treanor and Flynn.
