Treinfhir Gathering gets underway

Over 200 people from Ireland and across the globe are expected to congregate in Co Monaghan for the Fourth International Treinfhir Gathering, from tomorrow, Thursday, June 18 to Sunday, June 21.

This is a major four-day celebration of shared heritage for those bearing the surnames Treanor, Trainor, Traynor and Trainer. Held every four years, the event provides a welcome boost to the local economy, with backing from Monaghan Tourism and Fáilte Ireland.

A highlight of the opening day, Thursday, June 18 at 3pm, will be the Canon Moynagh Commemoration at Corracrin Chapel, honouring the 19th-century priest who assisted many locals in emigrating to Prince Edward Island, often financing their journeys.

The ceremony and Monaghan Co Council’s welcome reception will be attended by Canadian Ambassador to Ireland Dennis King, himself a native of Prince Edward Island. The programme includes a packed schedule of heritage tours, historical talks, genealogy sessions and cultural activities, with participants travelling from countries including Australia, the United States, Canada and the UK to reconnect with their ancestral roots.

Events range from guided tours of North Monaghan, Clones and surrounding areas, to set dancing workshops, walking tours, and a traditional céilí, culminating in an 'American Wake' event reflecting Ireland’s emigrant past. The gathering, which recently received a Special Achievement Award at The Anglo-Celt Monaghan Business and Tourism Awards, continues to grow in significance as a celebration of diaspora connections and local heritage.
