Worker injured in accident at Cavan food plant

The injured man is understood to have suffered minor burns

A worker has been injured following an industrial accident at one of Cavan's largest food manufacturing facilities this morning.

The incident occurred at the Crust & Crumb production plant in Ballyconnell on Wednesday morning, June 18, prompting an emergency response to the scene.

The injured man is understood to have suffered minor burns. Emergency services - gardaí and fire services - attended the facility, while the Health and Safety Authority has since been notified and is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Crust & Crumb, led by Chief Executive Mark McCaffrey, is one of the region's most significant employers, with close to 300 staff working across its operations.

The Ballyconnell-based company has undergone major expansion in recent years, most notably with the commissioning of an 80,000 sq ft processing facility that has been described as the most advanced pizza manufacturing plant in Europe.

The company has in recent years grown to become Ireland's largest manufacturer of ambient, chilled and frozen flatbread products, supplying leading retail and foodservice customers. Its Ballyconnell operation serves markets across Europe and the Middle East, while its Derrylin facilities cater to customers throughout the UK.
