Water mains upgrade works to begin in Cavan Town and 'Blayney
Work in Castleblayney is to reduce leakage while 1.8kms of water mains is to be laid in Cavan Town in preparation for more housing
MAJOR water mains upgrade works are set to begin in Castleblayney and Cavan Town next week.
In Castleblayney, essential upgrade woks will replace ageing backyard water mains, helping to improve water quality and reduce leakage in The Crescent area.
The project in the south of Cavan Town aims to “unlock capacity” for the development of new housing in the area over the coming years and will involve the laying of more than 1.8kms of new mains.
The works, which are due to commence from next week, will take place along the Ballinagh Road (the N55), from the N55 roundabout at Corlurgan as far as the junction with the Killycannan/Cornaseer Road (the L6566).
The work in the Crescent Estate in Castleblayney will involve the decommissioning of backyard service connections as well as the delivery of 540 metres of new water mains constructed along the public road.
Uisce Éireann says backyard service replacements are a crucial element of the utility company’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.
“By decommissioning these fragile backyard services and replacing them with modern, durable water mains, a significant source of hidden leakage is eliminated, and residents will enjoy a more reliable water supply,” Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, Patricia Lowry, said.
The works in Castleblayney are expected to be completed by Spring 2027.
“Fixing leaks can be complicated, but we are making progress. Leakage levels are now at their lowest ever, with water loss reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% nationally,” Patricia said.
The larger project in Cavan Town will help to provide the water infrastructure for Cavan to develop new housing at scale over the coming years.
Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers and road users. In order for the works to be carried out efficiently and to protect the safety of crews and road users, some traffic management measures, in the form of lane closures with a traffic light system, will be required. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.
