Gardaí warn about spread of 'disinformation'
An Garda Síochána continues to warn about the increasing spread of false information online.
An Garda Síochána confirms it has investigated claims circulating on social media and messaging apps regarding alleged incidents in Cavan, finding that no criminal offence had occurred.
In a statement, Gardaí said they are “aware of claims in circulation online and via messaging apps in relation to incidents in Co. Cavan.”
The force confirmed that said reports have been thoroughly examined, stating: “These matters have been fully investigated by Gardaí in Cavan and there no criminal offence took place.”
The statement comes as An Garda Síochána continues to warn about the increasing spread of false information online.
“An Garda Síochána has regularly highlighted the rise in the level of disinformation, misinformation and fake news,” the statement continues.
Gardaí warn that false information is often deliberately amplified online, adding that “misinformation, disinformation and fake news are typically amplified by online accounts in order to spread fear and concern amongst communities.”
As a result the public is being urged to exercise caution before sharing unverified claims online.
“An Garda Síochána appeals to all members of the public to independently verify any information that you are reading on social media and/or messaging apps,” the statement says.
The post also stressed that tackling false information requires a collective effort, adding: “It is not just the responsibility of An Garda Síochána to challenge this disinformation, misinformation and fake news circulating in society but also the responsibility of mainstream civic society and media.”
