Monaghan gets €900k for storm road repairs
Monaghan County Council has received an additional €900,000 in Government funding to repair regional and local roads damaged during Storm Chandra earlier this year.
The funding, announced last week by Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien, forms part of a €40M package for roads affected by severe weather.
The “weather bomb”, as it was described in meteorological reports last January, brought torrential rainfall and widespread flooding, causing extensive damage to regional and local roads across several counties.
Following assessments carried out in March, around 130 roads nationwide were found to require complete reconstruction, while more than 440 sustained significant damage. Several bridges were also damaged and rendered impassable.
Monaghan County Council had sought additional funding to carry out the necessary restoration works and was one of nine local authorities to receive an allocation. Cavan did not qualify for funding, as none of its damaged roads met the scheme's eligibility criteria.
