Busy time as local players prepare for All-Ireland stages

Cavan players produced a series of outstanding performances at one of Ireland’s premier one-wall handball events as the annual Lough Showdown in Loughmacrory, Co Tyrone once again attracted hundreds of competitors from across the country.

The prestigious tournament, renowned for its exceptionally high standard, proved a happy hunting ground for Breffni competitors, with Ben Devlin and Max Finnegan both reaching finals and Sean Harney enjoying a breakthrough run against strong opposition.

Fresh from claiming the All-Ireland Junior Softball Singles title, Kingscourt's Ben Devlin switched back to his preferred wallball code and immediately demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the country's brightest young talents.

Devlin navigated a difficult draw with a series of impressive victories, saving his best performance for the semi-final where he edged Team Ireland number one Fiachra Ó Duill in a thrilling 25-23 contest.

Awaiting him in the final was seven-time Irish champion Conor McElduff, who was making his return to competitive action. Devlin produced another superb display against one of the sport's modern greats before eventually going down 25-15 in a high-quality final. While defeat denied him the title, his performances throughout the weekend confirmed his ability to compete with the very best players in the country.

Kingscourt youngster Max Finnegan also enjoyed an outstanding tournament in the Boys' U13 competition, progressing all the way to the final from a field of 55 players.

Finnegan began with a hard-earned 21-17 victory over Cathal Dillon before producing a dominant display to defeat Donnacha Harney 21-7 in the last 16. His confidence continued to grow as he defeated Aodhan Conway of Tyrone 21-4 in the quarter-final before overcoming Wexford's Paddy Byrne 21-14 in the semi-final.

The final proved a thrilling encounter against Wexford's George Foley. Despite another excellent performance, Finnegan narrowly missed out on the title, losing narrowly on a 21-19 scoreline after a contest that could easily have gone either way.

Another player to impress was Mullagh native Sean Harney, who represents Virginia Handball Club. Harney enjoyed what many regarded as a breakthrough tournament, putting together a remarkable run to the semi-finals with four convincing victories.

He opened with a comfortable 21-5 win over McKissock before defeating Keys 21-9 in the second round. Harney then accounted for number four seed Bobby Cavanagh 21-11 in the last 16 before producing another composed performance to overcome Kingscourt's Breffni McHugh 21-14 in the quarter-final.

His excellent campaign eventually came to an end in the semi-finals, where he lost 21-15 to Foley, but reaching the last four represented another significant step forward and capped an excellent weekend for the Virginia club player.

Breffni McHugh also deserves credit for his performances. He reached the quarter-finals after recording two impressive victories, defeating Tom Donnelly 21-6 before accounting for Charlie Duff 21-13. McHugh's run was eventually halted by Harney in a competitive all-Cavan quarter-final but he emerged with plenty of positives from an excellent tournament.

There was disappointment for Jamie O'Reilly, who was narrowly beaten in his opening-round encounter despite producing a spirited display.

Cormac Farrelly, Padraig McHugh and Ronan Finnegan also represented Cavan. While all three exited before the latter stages, they acquitted themselves well against older opposition and remain eligible for next year's competition, leaving plenty of encouragement for the future.

Attention now turns back to domestic competition, with the county softball league entering a crucial stage. The final round of group games is due to be completed in the coming days before the knockout stages get underway, with teams battling for places in the latter rounds.

There is also plenty of excitement ahead at provincial and national level. James Brady and Paul Brady recently captured the Ulster Masters Softball Doubles title and now face Limerick opposition in the All-Ireland semi-final at Fahy, Co Offaly, on Sunday morning.

The experienced duo booked their place by defeating Tyrone pair Shane O'Neill and Shane Hazlett in the Ulster final and will be hoping to carry that momentum into the national stages.

There is another major All-Ireland assignment for Cavan on Saturday when Paddy O'Reilly and Eddie Halligan take on Limerick opponents in the Masters B Doubles semi-final. That match will have home advantage, taking place in Virginia at 12.30pm, with a place in the All-Ireland final at stake.

Elsewhere on Sunday, St Mellan's duo Szymon Polewski and Matthew Gibbons take on Cork in the All-Ireland Junior B Doubles semi-final at St Coman's in Roscommon.

Looking further ahead, preparations continue at pace for one of the highlights of the domestic handball calendar, the Virginia Elite 8 Doubles tournament over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The prestigious event will feature 16 of the best players in the country and promises another weekend of top-class action in Virginia. With many of Ireland's leading players expected to compete, organisers are preparing for a showcase event that it is hoped will establish itself as one of the premier tournaments on the handball calendar.
