Spellbound at the library
Belturbet Library is enjoying one of its busiest summers yet, with a packed programme of events encouraging families, children and adults alike to make the most of everything their local library has to offer.
The latest highlight came on Saturday, July 11, when professional magician and children's entertainer Seán Galligan captivated families with an interactive magic show as part of the library's summer programme.
The performance is one of a growing number of events taking place as Belturbet Library continues to expand its community offering.
Central to this year's programme is the Summer Stars Reading Adventure, the free national initiative encouraging children under 13 to keep reading during the school holidays.
Belturbet Librarian Celine Maguire said the programme is designed to help children maintain and improve their reading skills over the summer.
“It's basically to get children reading throughout the summer so they can keep improving their reading skills and don't become stagnant,” she said.
Children register at the library to receive an activity pack and reading card. As they continue reading over the holidays, they collect stamps, earn a certificate and are entered into a prize draw.
“It doesn't have to be library-specific,” adds Celine. “It's about books in general, just to keep them busy and engaged with reading.”
She has also noticed a growing interest in the library.
“Kids are using the library more than ever. Especially since the end of COVID, it is getting busier,” she told the Celt.
Alongside books, the library now offers LEGO activities, sensory resources and dedicated play spaces, reflecting its role as an increasingly vibrant community hub.
One of the most anticipated returning events is Sensory Saturdays, providing a relaxed, inclusive space where children and families can enjoy sensory equipment and quiet activities.
“It's a welcoming space for everyone. Parents can come in too, whether it's to read, do crosswords or simply enjoy the environment,” said Celine.
Looking ahead, the library hopes to expand its programme further, with additional workshops and technology support sessions for older people under consideration.
“We've loads going on and we're going to be adding more activities into the event space going forward,” she said.
