Celebration's at Rossmore's Lady Captain's Day

For Collete Morgan, the Lady Captain at Rossmore Golf Club, the game has been a part of family life for years.

When she married her husband, Joe, in 1998 she took up golf, so that she could play with him.

She enjoyed it, decided to keep playing, and on Saturday found herself on the first tee, welcoming members getting ready to take part in Lady Captain’s Day.

“I gave it up when we had our children, I didn’t have time,” Collete laughed.

“We had three boys, they all played here. They still play- Gregory, Ritchie, and Dan. Two of them are still members here. A real family affair,” she added.

Collete still gets out “as often as she can”, and the good weather has given ample opportunity to get out onto the course.

For years she has been involved with Rossmore’s committee, and when she was asked to be Lady Captain her response was ready:

“It’s something you think about, and I thought, ‘no, I can’t’. It’s a big commitment and there’s a lot of work,” Collete explained.

When she was asked to be the Vice-Captain last year, that all changed.

“Last year, I was asked and I thought, ‘I’m ready, I’ll commit’.”

All morning members, past-Captain’s, friends, family, and well wishers were stopping by to wish Collete well. A touching tribute, given all the work that went into making sure everything was ready on the day.

“I always keep myself busy. I do sewing, and art, and all of those kind of things. But I’ve had to give all of that up to do this. I’ll take it up again next year when I’m not quite as busy,” she said.

It’s clear that being Lady Captain isn’t something that she’s taken lightly. She knows the importance of the day, not just for her and her family, but for the entire club.

“It’s one of the big days of the year. You buy your new t-shirt and you wear your new shoes for it. It’s the one everybody wants to win.”
