Silent red shoe exhibit to raise awareness on domestic abuse

Cavan's Multicultural Women’s Shed will host a silent awareness installation event this evening to raise awareness on domestic abuse, to remind anyone experiencing abuse that they are not alone and that help is available.

Visitors to the “You Are Not Alone” event taking place at Market Square will see a silent installation of red women’s shoes, each accompanied by a battery-operated candle.

The shoes symbolise women whose lives have been affected by domestic abuse, while the candles represent remembrance, hope, and solidarity.

"Red shoe installations have become an internationally recognised symbol used in many countries to raise awareness of violence against women. Through this powerful visual display, communities encourage people to stop, reflect, and recognise that support is available," Chairperson of the Multicultural Women's Shed Group Tetiana Hrytsyk told the Celt.

A Safe Ireland Cavan & Monaghan representative will be present throughout the event to offer information and answer questions in a safe, confidential, and supportive environment.

An information table will also provide leaflets and details of local support services for women and children experiencing domestic abuse.

"The purpose of this installation is simple; to reach women who may feel trapped, isolated, frightened, or unsure where to turn. We want them to know that they are not alone, that there are people who will listen without judgement, and that support is available whenever they are ready to ask for help.

"Our hope is that even if just one woman sees this message and finds the courage to reach out, the installation will have made a real difference."

The event will take place today (Friday) at Market Square, Cavan Town from 4pm until 7pm. All welcome.
