Cavan councillor to call for RTB overhaul

A Cavan county councillor is set to call for an overhaul of the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) by demanding a system that responds more effectively to the needs of responsible landlords and tenants.

The private rental sector plays an increasingly important role in Ireland's housing system. However, both landlords and tenants can and have experienced difficulties navigating regulations, resolving disputes and obtaining timely decisions when problems arise.

Significant changes to rental legislation came into effect on March 1, 2026, introducing stronger tenant protections, new rent-control arrangements and changes to the circumstances in which tenancies can be terminated. Further reforms in September 2026 strengthened the RTB's enforcement powers and introduced additional transparency measures.

Fianna Fáil Councillor John Paul Feeley's motion, to go before a meeting of Cavan County Council next week, Monday, November 9, asks that the RTB operates as a properly resourced and responsive regulator that should protect tenants while recognising the rights and responsibilities of landlords who provide good-quality accommodation.
