Two arrested over Carrickmacross dissident republican operation

Gardaí are not revealing details of an examination they carried out in a vehicle for 'operational reasons'

A woman and man have been arrested following an operation by specialist gardaí into dissident republican activity in the Carrickmacross area.

On Wednesday, members of An Garda Síochána attached to SDU (Special Detective Unit) stopped a vehicle travelling on the N2 south of Carrickmacross at 3pm.

Following the vehicle stop, An Garda Síochána requested the assistance of the Irish Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

The EOD team completed an examination of the vehicle but An Garda Síochána are not releasing the outcome of the examination for operational reasons.

The driver of the vehicle, a woman aged in her 20s, was arrested and detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

A man aged in his 40s was arrested later in connection with the investigation, and is detained pursuant to Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939.

According to gardaí both people arrested are still being detained this morning, with the man being held at a garda station in the Dublin region.

"Investigations ongoing," a statement from the guards says.
