Speed ramp damaging vehicles

A local councillor who has been taking “weekly calls” from concerned members of the public over a speed ramp in Bailieborough says it is “doing its job” but “regularly damaging vehicles”.

Councillor Adrian Rogers (Aon) raised the issue of the ramp at St Anne's Cemetery on the Shercock Road at the latest meeting of the Bailieborough – Cootehill MD.

He told the meeting how the ramp, if you travel from Bailieborough in the direction of Kells, is broken away on the left-hand side causing vehicles to tilt abruptly or fall off the ramp.

“It’s all sunk down on one side and causing damage to vehicles. I’ve asked that something be done about it,” Cllr Rogers told the Celt. “The ramp is still needed, and it is doing its job in slowing down traffic, but I asked that the council look into repairing the damage.”

The crossing was installed in 2024 under an Active Travel Scheme. Cavan County Council says the purpose of the scheme was to enhance pedestrian safety and encourage walking among residents by providing improved infrastructure.

“The zebra crossing was installed specifically to ensure safe pedestrian access from Borora Park,” the council told the Celt in a statement.

“As a result of poor soil subgrade in the area, significant settlement in the road and surrounding land has occurred. This settlement has in turn reduced visibility of the ramp to motorists when travelling southbound towards Kells,” the council statement reads.

The County Council said the Municipal District is investigating the matter in more detail to determine the extent of the issue and the most viable solution.

“Simply reshaping the ramp with macadam may exacerbate the problem due to the added weight, so the issue needs to be examined in greater detail and potential options costed,” a council spokesperson said.
