Thundery showers bring flooding risk

Cavan and Monaghan are in for a warm but unsettled Bank Holiday Monday, with heavy showers and the risk of localised flooding developing later in the day.

After a mix of cloud, sunny spells and scattered showers this morning, conditions will turn cloudier through the afternoon as rain pushes northwards from the south. Some of the downpours could be heavy and thundery, bringing a risk of spot flooding. It will remain humid, with top temperatures of 19°C to 24°C in light to moderate easterly winds, becoming southeasterly later.

Tonight will stay mostly cloudy with further spells of heavy rain and showers extending across the region. The risk of localised flooding will continue before conditions gradually ease later in the night. It will be another mild and humid night, with temperatures falling to between 12°C and 16°C.

Tuesday will begin cloudy and misty with patchy rain or drizzle, but brighter spells will develop during the day. Scattered showers are expected, with some turning heavy and thundery across Ulster. Highest temperatures will range from 18°C to 23°C.

Looking ahead, the week will remain mixed and unsettled. Wednesday is expected to be cooler and breezier, with outbreaks of rain and fresh westerly winds keeping temperatures down to between 14°C and 19°C. Sunshine and showers are forecast for Thursday before further rain arrives on Friday.

While unsettled conditions are likely to persist into next weekend, there are tentative signs that higher pressure could bring more settled weather later in the weekend.
