Do Not Consume Notice Issued for Arvagh Public Water Supply
Do not use tap water for drinking, preparing food, cooking or brushing teeth.
A Do Not Consume Notice has been issued for customers supplied by the Arvagh Public Water Supply in Co Cavan following the detection of elevated levels of manganese in water entering the treatment plant.
Uisce Éireann has advised all customers affected by the notice not to use tap water for drinking, preparing food, cooking or brushing their teeth until further notice.
The utility provider said the measure has been introduced to protect public health while emergency works are carried out to address the issue and restore a safe drinking water supply.
Customers have been warned that boiling the water will not make it safe to drink. It is particularly important that tap water is not used for preparing bottles or given to bottle-fed babies.
Uisce Éireann said it understands the notice will cause concern and disruption for households, schools and businesses in the area.
The company said: “Protecting public health is our absolute priority,” and described the issuing of a Do Not Consume Notice as a last resort.
Teams from Uisce Éireann are working to identify the cause of the elevated manganese levels and resolve the problem. The utility is also working closely with the Health Service Executive (HSE) and other relevant stakeholders as efforts continue to restore the water supply.
Customers in the affected area are being urged to follow the advice provided until the notice is lifted.
People can check whether their property is affected by visiting the Water Quality section of the Uisce Éireann website and entering their Eircode. A map showing the affected area is also available through the Supply and Service section of the website.
Customers who require further information can contact the Uisce Éireann customer care team, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on 1800 278 278.
Uisce Éireann has said the Do Not Consume Notice will remain in place until it is satisfied that the water supply is safe. Further updates will be provided as emergency works progress.
Residents, businesses and other customers supplied by the Arvagh Public Water Supply are advised to continue following official guidance and not to consume tap water until further notice.
