Cavan get upperhand in Lakers derby
Cavan Lakers senior men got their new season off to a winning start on Saturday night with an 80-66 victory over Muckno Lakers of Castleblayney at St Patrick’s College, Cavan.
The opening quarter was closely contested, with both sides showing plenty of intensity as they settled into the game. Cavan worked hard defensively, while Muckno moved the ball well and made the home side work for their scores.
Cavan Lakers began to take control in the second quarter, increasing the tempo and turning good defensive work into quick scores at the other end. Riccardo Vennettilli and Arnoldas Juska were among those contributing as Cavan outscored Muckno 29-11 in the quarter to take a healthy advantage into half-time.
The home side continued to build on that lead in the third quarter, adding a further 25 points to Muckno’s 21. Vaidas Martisius and Darlington McKing Olayemi worked well under the boards, while Cavan also found their range from outside.
Seán Moran was particularly effective from three-point range, hitting four threes in the third quarter. Muckno continued to battle, with David McMahon adding nine points during the period, but Cavan maintained control heading into the final quarter.
Muckno responded well in the fourth, scoring 23 points with Cooper and Andrew McMahon among those contributing. Cavan, however, had built enough of an advantage through the middle quarters and saw out the game to secure the 80-66 win.
There were plenty of positives for Cavan in their opening game, not least the contribution of the younger members of the squad. Seán Moran, Darlington McKing Olayemi and Arda Ozden combined for 43 points, playing an important part in the victory.
Cavan Lakers will look to build on the result next weekend when the senior men face Blackwater Steelers of Monaghan at St Macartan’s College at 8pm. It will also be another busy weekend for the club, with 11 of Cavan Lakers’ juvenile teams on the road for week two of their games, travelling to Navan, Dundalk, Ashbourne and Drogheda.
