New plan to tackle vacant shops in two local towns

Project to focus on shops in Bailieborough and Carrickmacross

Bailieborough and Carrickmacross are among 26 towns nationally to benefit from a new initiative aimed at bringing vacant shopfronts back into use.

Minister of State for Retail Alan Dillon proposed the retail activation programme as part of the 'Vacant to Vibrant' initiative. Local authorities, regeneration officers and Local Enterprise Offices will work together to identify suitable businesses and services to occupy these empty commercial premises.

“Empty shopfronts do not create jobs, attract visitors, or support local communities,” said Minister Dillon. “We need to turn vacant properties into places where businesses can start, grow and succeed.”

Under the proposals, businesses interested in moving into vacant premises would receive practical advice, financial mentoring and marketing assistance through Local Enterprise Offices. Support also includes assessing the commercial viability of premises and the costs involved before committing to signing a lease.
