Call to remove barriers for new Irish schools
Cavan Sinn Féin Councillor Stiofán Conaty is calling on the Government to remove what he describes as an effective moratorium on establishing new Gaelscoileanna and Gaelcholáistí, arguing that families should have greater access to education through the Irish language.
A motion on the subject is set to go before a meeting of Cavan County Council next week, Monday, November 9.
Demand for Irish-medium education has continued to grow, with parents increasingly seeking opportunities for their children to become fluent in Irish while receiving the same broad educational opportunities as pupils in English-medium schools.
Cllr Conaty has spoke previously on the matter, and hopes that pressure will translate commitments committed to by the government to expand Irish-medium education outside of Gaeltacht areas into practical action.
