Consultation on SLNCR greenway gets underway

A third public consultation has begun with respect to the development of the Sligo, Leitrim, Northern Counties, Railway (SLNCR) Greenway.

A preferred corridor or route has been identified for the project, and the latest engagement is to inform stakeholders of the proposals in advancing the design process.

The public Consultation opened yesterday (Tuesday), April 29, and will run until 5pm on Tuesday, May 27, with in-person information events set to be take place at the Sligo Park Hotel (May 6, 12-8pm); Dromahair Library (May 7, 12-8pm); and at the Community Centre in Belcoo, Fermanagh (May 8, 12-8pm).

West Cavan Councillor John Paul Feeley (FF) has welcomed the progress made to date and encouraged people to get involved in the public consultation in order to secure the best possible outcome.

Leitrim County Council, in partnership with Sligo County Council, Cavan County Council, Fermanagh & Omagh District Council, under the auspices of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) are developing the greenway plan. It will connect Sligo Town to Enniskillen. The route passes through Carraroe, Ballysadare, Collooney, Ballintogher, Dromahair, Manorhamilton, Glenfarne, Blacklion, Belcoo and Letterbreen.

The preferred corridor has an average width of about 200 metres, and Cllr Feeley says: “There is still a lot of discretion available. It is very important that people engage in the process, that they make submissions, come to the public consultation events organised in the coming weeks, and have their say. This is going to proceed to planning and now is the time to make sure we get the route right, and if there are any accommodation works that need to be provided, that they are put in place now.”

Arup has been appointed by Leitrim County Council, as the lead tenderer, to provide engineering and other specialist consultancy services.

It is tasked with bringing the project through the planning process both north and south of the border and to provide tender documents for construction of the proposed greenway.

Public consultation gives members of the public a chance to identify key constraints and opportunities during the design process.

Project Liaison Officers (PLOs) and the Project Team will be available to provide information on the preferred route or corridor and enable stakeholders to provide feedback, highlighting any issues and opportunities potentially missed during the consultations.
