Nine schools to train young pollinator ambassadors
Nine Cavan schools have been selected to participate in the Pollinator Project and chosen to train young pollinator ambassadors in 2025.
Ireland’s largest and longest-running pollinator education initiative, the aim is to nurture the next generation to respect and protect biodiversity and Ireland’s bee populations for their critical importance.
The schools selected include: Drumcrave National School, St Mogue's College, Aughadreena National School, St Patrick's College, Kilnaleck National School, St Clare's Primary School, Drumkilly National School, St Felims National School, and St. Aidan's Comprehensive School.
Each participating school will receive a Pollinator Kit packed with essential resources, including wildflower seeds, habitat creation tools, lesson plans and access to biodiversity workshops.
This year, the Pollinator Project- a collaboration between SIRO, Ireland's 100% fibre broadband provider, and Biodiversity in Schools- hopes to train 9,000 new young ambassadors overall.
Pollinator Pledge
Since the programme’s launch in 2023, more than 24,000 schoolchildren have been trained as pollinator ambassadors, helping to create bee-friendly spaces in schools and communities nationwide. Overall, this year’s project will engage an estimated 75,000 students across Ireland.
Schools across Ireland are meanwhile invited by taking the Pollinator Pledge. By doing so, schools dedicate a section of their grounds to becoming a no-mow meadow, and in return receive formal certification, access to educational worksheets, and an invitation to exclusive online classroom training. Schools can sign up until June 30, contributing to a growing national network of pollinator-friendly spaces.
For schools who want to showcase the initiatives they have taken to create pollinator friendly school environments, there is also the opportunity to compete for the Gold Bee 2025 Award, with one winning school awarded the Gold Bee Trophy, and a biodiversity hamper worth €1,000.
More details about the competition can be found on the Biodiversity in Schools website.
