Fun at a recent Robotics event in Breifne College hosted by Daniel Peeters.

Create your own robot

An impressive programme of events has been arranged across County Cavan for Cruinniú na nÓg, a day of free creative activities for children and young people under the age of 18 years. Here is one of our top five highlights...

Children and young people are being urged to dive into the world of robotics at the hands-on workshop, part of Cruinniú na nÓg celebrations! Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this workshop at Johnston Central Library is perfect for ages 10-14. Learn the basics using Vex Robotics and see the robot come to life!

From 10am to 12 noon, the children will be able to construct their own robot and then put it to the test by competing in challenges in things like robot football.

Organiser Daniel Peeters has held many robotics workshops in schools around Cavan and they are always great fun building and programming the robots. “It's basically STEM education,” Daniel says, adding, “It's a lot of fun. It's got sort of a Lego feel to it.”

There will also be an opportunity to develop programming skills.

“In the past you would make a programme and it's just something on a screen, but here you will be able to code the drive train of the robot to make it go forwards and backwards, and then you can programme the motors and you get immediate feedback. That's very accessible.”

Cruinniú na nÓg takes place on June 7 with activities ranging from workshops and tutorials to recitals and readings. You can find more events in Cavan here.
