Civil Defence hosts annual county exercise

Cavan County Civil defence held a hugely successful annual county exercise on Sunday, May 18, amid the scenic grounds and modern facilities of Castle Saunderson International Scouting Centre.

The event brought together around 50 volunteers for a full day of training under bright, sunny skies.

The morning sessions focused on ambulance operation. Volunteers received training with the different equipment on the ambulances, learning how equipment is stored and operated. Demonstrations included the use of tail lifts, suspension and winch systems, securing wheelchairs safely, and using various patient monitors effectively.

In the afternoon all volunteers took part in a simulated missing person search scenario, allowing them to put their skills into practice in a realistic scenario.

A drone team was also present for the purpose of demonstrating how aerial support can be a vital tool in covering large or difficult terrain quickly.

Also on display was the MapXY system, a digital mapping tool used to track searched areas and help identify the most likely location of a missing person based on their medical condition and fitness level.

The team also demonstrated how to conduct a safe evacuation of a casualty from a remote area by using an ATV and stretcher, transporting the individual safely to an awaiting ambulance.
