Cavan celebrates Scoot to School Day with St Felim’s NS

In a fun and forward-thinking celebration in Cavan as part of National Scoot to School Week, Cavan County Council, in partnership with Green-Schools, St. Felim’s National School and An Taisce, hosted a successful Scoot to School Morning, promoting active travel and sustainable commuting on Friday, 13th June.

Over 30 students, accompanied by parents, teachers, Green-Schools representatives, and Council officers, took part in the event by scooting and cycling from Con Smith Park to St. Felim’s N.S. The initiative aimed to highlight the growing momentum behind climate-friendly travel options for local families. The group received support from the local Gardaí and was led by members of Cavan Town Fire Brigade in a fire engine.

The Scoot to School participants travelled along the recently developed cycling infrastructure and improved footpaths, which were showcased as examples of Cavan County Council’s commitment to making active travel safer and more accessible for all.

Council staff and Green-Schools Travel Officers stewarded the route, ensuring a safe and positive experience for the young participants. The event concluded at the school with the raising of the Green-Schools Travel Flag and a short address by newly elected Cathaoirleach Cllr John Paul Feeley.

Cllr Feeley said “Scoot to School is a fantastic way to empower our children to lead on climate action. It was inspiring to see students showing that active travel can be a fun, healthy, and everyday part of life in Cavan.”

Chief Executive Eoin Doyle credited the success of the event to strong partnerships noting:

“We’re committed to building on the momentum behind Active Travel in Cavan by progressing projects at Farnham National School and along the route from Cavan General Hospital to the Bus Office on Farnham Street. In partnership with the NTA, we are also developing a Local Transport Plan to ensure that sustainable transport remains a priority and to help shape a greener, safer model for Cavan Town.”

Climate Action Officer, Helen Smith, highlighted the broader message of the initiative, adding, “This event marks a cultural shift in how we view school travel. We’re supporting children with the infrastructure to travel safely and sustainably.”

The Scoot to School event not only celebrated students' enthusiasm but also highlighted Cavan’s leadership in health, climate action, and community collaboration. By investing in infrastructure and fostering positive habits from a young age, the county is paving the way for a more sustainable future.
