Red Forest Fire warning
Dispose of smoking materials carefully and keep access free
Cavan County Fire Service is urging the public to remain vigilant and keep fire safety front of mind this weekend, particularly as warm and dry weather increases the risk of fire outbreaks across the county.
People are reminded to keep access roads and gates clear to allow emergency vehicles through, dispose of smoking materials properly, and take any rubbish home to avoid adding to fire hazards. Critically, disposable barbecues and campfires should not be used in wildland areas, where dry grasses and vegetation—both in rural forests and even in urban settings—can ignite easily.
The Fire Service is highlighting the serious dangers posed by vegetation fires near forests, recreation areas, and locations close to urban centres. Visitors to forests, beaches, parks, and similar areas are asked not to bring barbecues or other ignition sources, and to be conscious of access routes for emergency services.
Under current extreme fire risk conditions, even a small ignition source in dry grass, gorse, or heather can lead to fast-moving and unpredictable wildfires that are extremely difficult to control. Fires during this period are not only a risk to property and public safety, but can also have devastating effects on wildlife and habitats, particularly young animals and birds.
In 2025 alone, over 4,300 hectares of land, including more than 300 hectares of forest, have already been damaged by fires. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has issued seven Fire Danger Notices this year in response to persistent high-risk weather conditions.
Forest owners are urged to implement fire prevention plans immediately, maintain high vigilance, and cooperate with neighbours to reduce risks. Open fires, barbecues, and other ignition sources must not be used in forested or public lands during the current heatwave. The farming community is also asked to exercise caution with machinery use around hay meadows, and to avoid burning vegetation on farmland.
Enjoy the fine weather, but please act responsibly and help prevent unnecessary fires that threaten lives, property, wildlife, and valuable emergency service resources.
