One candidate confirmed as board remaining tight-lipped

Breaking

Cavan county board were remaining tight-lipped on prospective candidates for the position of senior football team manager after the nomination process for clubs closed on Friday evening last.

The Anglo-Celt can confirm, from alternative sources, that Finbar O’Reilly has been nominated for the position by his club Lacken. It is understood that O’Reilly is not the only nomination for the position but the board would not reveal the identities of any other candidates when contacted this morning (Monday).

O’Reilly, who previously guided St Patrick’s College to the MacRory Cup and Arva to the All-Ireland Junior Club title and a county Intermediate Championship as well as bringing home club Lacken to a Division 1 league crown, represented Cavan at senior level as a player for a decade.

The county board have appointed a five-man sub-committee to oversee the process, consisting of Mark O’Rourke (chairman), John Keating (vice-chairman), Martin Cahill (secretary/Head of Operations), Tom Moore (treasurer) and former Cavan footballer and U21 manager Peter Reilly from Knockbride.

That sub-committee is due to meet this evening after which there is a possibility that the nominations will be made public.

In the absence of confirmation from the board, speculation has been widespread.

Among the names linked with the position is Dermot McCabe, the current Westmeath senior team manager who is employed as Games Development Manager with Cavan, although it is not known if McCabe has been nominated by home club Gowna or any other club or if he would be willing to leave his position in Westmeath.

The sub-committee are not confined to nominations from clubs and it is likely they will make approaches to individuals from outside the county in the coming days also.
