Repairs on collapsed bridge to begin within two weeks

Repairs are expected to commence within the “next two weeks” on a west Cavan bridge that partially collapsed following recent “severe” flooding.

The timeframe for the works at Mullaghboy Bridge is subject to procurement procedures going off without a hitch.

Cavan County Council confirmed to the Celt this week that the authority is “currently in the process of appointing a specialist contractor” to carry out replacement works.

The bridge, located on the L-1012-0 road between Gowlan and Glangevlin near Blacklion, suffered extensive damage during what has been described as an “exceptional rainfall event”.

Photographs from the scene show a large cavity at the site of the collapse, estimated to be up to 10 feet deep.

The council spokesperson explained, subject to procurement procedures, that repairs to the damaged structure are expected to commence within the “next two weeks”.

The collapse prompted an emergency road closure with local diversions also implemented.

Some residents have complained about being forced to travel more than 12 kilometres out of their way as a result, and remain anxious for a swift resolution.

Local Fianna Fáil councillor John Paul Feeley acknowledged the impact the bridge collapse is having on the community.

“We were all shocked to see this bridge destroyed as a result of the very severe flooding and it’s a huge inconvenience for as number of local families and the local group water scheme.

“I have been in constant contact with staff at Cavan County Council to progress the restoration of the bridge.”
