Gardaí continue clampdown on wayward road users

Vehicles seized and FCPNs issued in some cases.

Gardaí have intensified their clampdown on non-compliant road users, detaining several vehicles over the weekend and throughout the past month following a series of targeted operations across counties Cavan and Monaghan.

Seven vehicles were seized after being found uninsured last weekend, with prosecutions pending.

In one incident in Cavan, a car was stopped near a busy junction for erratic driving. The driver, a learner permit holder, was found to be unaccompanied. They also did not have L plates on display.

Further checks revealed the vehicle had an expired NCT and Road Tax, as well as two dangerously worn tyres.

Fixed Charge Penalty Notices (FCPNs) were issued and the vehicle seized.

In the Carrickmacross District, members of the Monaghan Roads Policing Unit meanwhile seized three vehicles and an E-scooter over the past week.

Three unaccompanied learner drivers were also identified, and FCPNs will be issued.

In Monaghan Town, Gardaí meanwhile confiscated another motorised scooter being used without a helmet, insurance, or licence.

The driver claimed these were unnecessary as the vehicle was electric but gardaí have responded by clarifying that all mechanically propelled vehicles require proper documentation and insurance.

“Whether it's electric, petrol or diesel, its an mechanically propelled vehicle and requires insurance,” officers warn.

Earlier this month, Gardaí in Carrickmacross intercepted a drug driver who tested positive for cocaine and another unaccompanied learner, both resulting in vehicle seizures.

Additional penalties were issued to multiple motorists for offences such as driving without valid tax or NCT, and failure to wear seat belts.
