Costcutter and Barry Group officially open the shop with Stephen King.

Revamped store in Killeshandra

KILLESHANDRA was abuzz last Thursday as the town’s newly renovated supermarket threw open its doors to customers and neighbours for a re-launch party.

Gorby’s shop on Main Street closed completely for a period while tradesmen worked around the clock to turn the long-established store into a new-look Costcutter.

The big reveal resulted in an extra-special WOW factor for everyone who attended the grand opening.

Proprietor/managers Gerard Gorby and Maria Smith from Newtowngore were joined by staff, old and new, to welcome customers through the doors of the revamped shop.

There was a party atmosphere with champagne corks popping, competitions and voucher give-aways, wine tasting, free samples from suppliers including Ice Cream Treats, Drummully Boxty and Cuisine de France and goodie bags for children and adults alike.

Local DJ Paul Corrigan was the MC on the day and Cavan and Killeshandra football legend, Stephen King, cut the ribbon to officially open Gorby’s Costcutter.

New look

The original store has been transformed and expanded into a spacious, modern store, which can not only supply local shoppers with all the usual necessities but a whole range of new offerings also.

Just as before, the Killeshandra shop stocks products from local suppliers like Lakeland Dairies, which, is quite literally on their back doorstep; Drummully Boxty, Cully’s Bakery and a range from Pat The Baker.

The Market Street Deli is a new addition with its own dedicated staff serving a range of hot food, breakfast and lunchtime options throughout the day.

And for those who don’t want to eat on the run,

Gorby’s also has a modern seated area where you can eat your meal in-house in comfort.

Gorby’s also provide the Urban Sips coffee and Freezi Licks ice-cream.

New staff

Gerard and Maria have taken on additional staff, creating even more employment in the area.

Maria told the Celt they took the decision to close the former shop for two weeks at the end of May and re-opened on June 10 to a great reaction from local people.

“At times over the 10 days we were closed, we were so immersed in all the work that you’d wonder how it would all come together but, it did.

“We had a lot of hands-on support from the Barry Group in Cork who manage the Costcutter brand and our local tradesmen really worked hard and pulled everything together to get us to where we are today,” Maria praised.

She said the feedback from customers, old and new, has made all the behind-the-scenes work worth it.

“The reaction from customers has been great,” she said, “Everyone has been so supportive and complimentary.

Maria says the end result would not have been possible without all the labour of local tradesmen and, of course, the staff at Gorby’s.

“The staff have a world of experience and know all our customers by name.

They really are the heart and soul of the shop. They know exactly what people want and, I have to say, it’s a joy to come into work.”

Gorby’s Costcutter on Main Street, Killeshandra is open for groceries, coffee, ice-cream, a sit-down meal, local produce and much more from 7:30am until 9pm, Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 7pm on Sundays.
