The pickleball community of Mullagh and Killinkere are getting together for a fundraiser.

Vision of Hope fundraiser

The East Cavan Pickleball Club is rallying around their dear friend Rob Purcell, who is battling one of the rarest cancers in the world. He was diagnosed with a Lacrimal Gland Tumor, which is an extremely rare form of cancer in the tear duct gland. Rob’s consultant shared that he is only the second patient in 25 years he has seen with this cancer. Worldwide, there have been only about 100 recorded cases since 1970.

This shocking diagnosis has left Rob and his family facing many unknowns. After extensive research, Rob discovered that only four centres in Europe specialise in treating this rare cancer with Carbon ion therapy. His journey will take him, his partner and their two young kids to Heidelberg University Hospital in Germany for six to seven weeks. He will begin his treatment on September 13.

“Now, it’s our turn to give back and support Rob and his family every step of the way,” says Yvonne Lynch from the Pickleball Club.

“Together, we can help ease the burden on his family while spreading awareness of this rare disease.”

She is one of the organisers behind the Pickleball fun day in Killinkere Leisure Centre on Sunday, September 7, from 11am. A day of pickleball with a tournament in the morning, followed by a taster-session for beginners and improvers in the afternoon.

“I’ve had the joy of knowing Rob through pickleball for over a year now, and I can truly say he is one of the kindest, most gentle souls you could ever meet. He has a calming presence on the court and brings so much positivity to our pickleball community," says Yvonne, hoping for many people from Mullagh, Killinkere and surrounding areas to join in.

Entry for the tournament will be €10 and raffle proceeds will go towards Rob’s treatment costs. Free tea and coffee will be provided. Donations via revolut to Geraldine Daly @gerdaly70 are also much appreciated.
