The late Paudie O'Reilly.

Remembering Padraig 'Paudie' O’Reilly

Obituary

The Killeshandra community was deeply saddened on Sunday, August 24, by the untimely passing of Padraig (Paudie) O’Reilly of Bawn, Killeshandra, who lost his life following a tragic accident. His loss is felt not only by his family, but by the entire town he loved so dearly.

Paudie was a man full of warmth, laughter, and kindness. Known for his friendly nature, quick wit, and the twinkle of mischief in his eye. Wherever he went in life, Paudie had a wonderful gift of lifting spirits and making people feel welcome.

At the heart of Paudie’s life was his family, his beloved wife Schira, and his children Grace and Finn, who were his pride and joy. He was devoted to them in every way, and they were never far from his side, whether at football matches, out on the lake, or simply at home on the farm.

A true son of Killeshandra, Paudie was deeply rooted in the community. He had a strong connection to the GAA, playing football at all levels and proudly winning an U14 All-Ireland Féile Hurling medal. In later years, he poured his energy into supporting underage teams, especially once Grace began playing football.

Paudie also gave generously of his time to the wider community. He was always willing to help when asked, and played a part in many local events over the years, including Loop the Lakes and the Festival of the Lakes. His readiness to get involved and his easy-going nature made him a valued friend and neighbour to so many.

Paudie’s education began in Scoil Bhríde, Killeshandra, continued at Moyne Community School, before he pursued Agricultural Studies at Mountbellew Agricultural College and later a degree in Animal Science in University College Dublin, where he furthered his knowledge and love of farming and the land.

From an early age, Paudie cared deeply for livestock, not just his own but also for neighbours, always ready to lend a helping hand. He built up a respected scanning and AI service for farmers, and his knowledge of animals earned him great trust in the farming community. His passion for pedigree Angus and Charolais cattle was evident in the pride he took in breeding and in improving genetics through AI, and in showing them, with notable successes at shows including the Tullamore Agricultural Show.

Fishing was another of Paudie’s great loves. He was an active member of the local trout and pike clubs, not only competing himself but encouraging younger fishermen and welcoming visitors from across Europe. He delighted in sharing the beauty of Killeshandra’s lakes and rivers, and he cherished the peace of a day spent by the water or out on his boat.

Paudie had a rare gift for friendship, his openness, warmth and easy nature drew people to him, and at every stage of his life he made friends who he cherished and kept close.

Paudie’s life was full and well lived, but it was cut far too short. His loss is deeply felt by all who knew him – as a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, neighbour, and friend. Killeshandra has lost another too young; someone whose laughter, generosity, and love for life touched countless people.

He leaves behind his heartbroken wife Schira, and his much-loved children, Grace and Finn, who will forever carry his love with them. He is also mourned by his loving parents, Meehaul and Pat, and his siblings, Mairéad, Fearghal, Aishling, Sinead, and Aoishe, along with a wide circle of relatives and friends.

His spirit will live on in his family, in the land he worked, the waters he fished, and in every corner of the community he helped shape.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
