How to start the conversation around succession
Teagasc is hosting a series of events during Generational Renewal week, running from September 8-12. The events consist of three evening webinars and two farm walks. The webinars will cover the topics of collaborative arrangements in agricultural systems, how to start the conversation around succession and inheritance and how to navigate the taxes and potential reliefs around farm transfers.
The beef farm walk at 6.30pm on the evening of Wednesday, September 10 on Gerard and Shane O’Connor’s farm in Cloonfa, Willsbrook, Co Roscommon (Eircode F45 C623) will cover various aspects of beef technical performance together with a presentation on the O’Connor’s farm succession plan. Gerard and Shane are currently farming under a joint herd number and have recently begun the process of transferring the farm to Shane.
The dairy walk on Friday, September 12 is taking place on the farm of Tony McCormack and Chris Cahill at Clonyn, Delvin, Co Westmeath. Eircode N91 PT61 at 11am. Tony and Chris are unrelated but have been farming together in a Registered Farm Partnership since 2022. The original dairy herd was expanded, and they are now milking 240 cows in a Spring Calving system. Significant capital investment has been made on the farm to facilitate a doubling of the herd.
At the event, Teagasc will cover the establishment of the partnership arrangement, the physical and financial performance on the farm and a guideline on establishing various collaborative arrangements. Come and hear first hand from Tony and Chris how their arrangement is working.
