Cavan students need bus service to DkIT – Conaty
STUDENTS from Cavan, who attend Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKiT), are having to pay for taxis, rely on family members and even miss class because of a lack of public transport links.
Sinn Féin councillor Stiofan Conaty tabled a motion at a meeting of Cavan County Council on Monday calling for “improved public transport and connectivity for students from Cavan returning to college in DkIT on Sunday evenings”.
He pointed out there is no Bus Éireann nor Local Link service to the college where so many Cavan students are studying. Cllr Conaty said he had been approached by a number of students who wanted the issue raised by him at council level.
“Students have to take expensive taxis, get lifts from family or even miss classes on Monday mornings because there is no dedicated bus service from here,” Cllr Conaty said.
“Students in Cavan and Monaghan make up a significant share of the pupils at DkIT and there should be a dedicated bus service from here to there,” he added.
Both councillors Niall Smith (FF) and Damien Brady (SF) supported Cllr Conaty’s motion along with Fianna Fáil’s John Paul Feeley who said: “This issue should be passed on to the National Transport Authority who are the appropriate agency to deal with this.”
