Conor McGregor spotted around Cavan
The MMA fighter is seeking political support for his presidential bid
CONOR ‘Notorius’ McGregor was in Cavan yesterday (Tuesday) to seek the support of Cavan County Councillors in his bid to enter the presidential race.
When in Cavan, the mixed martial artist called in with the guys at the Blackdragons Cavan Kickboxing / BJJ gym in Moynehall, dined in People’s Restaurant in Cavan Town and paid a visit to Ballyjamesduff.
Earlier in the day, he passed through Monaghan as he sought the nomination of local politicians there too.
On his social media he posted that he was “meeting Ireland’s future UFC champions” in Cavan.
On his visit to Monaghan he said: “A very positive day in beautiful County Monaghan! A lot of love on the streets! The people of Ireland are clear, McGregor for President!”
In order to be able to run for the office of President of Ireland, potential candidates like McGregor must receive the support of at least 20 members of the Oireachtas or the backing of at least four local authorities — city or county councils.
McGregor approached Leitrim County Council on Sunday by letter.
As of Monday, Cavan County Council had been approached by 14 potential candidates who are also seeking the support of councillors in their bid.
As a sportsman, Dubliner Conor McGregor held Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) titles of Featherweight and Lightweight Chamion, becoming the first UFC fighter to hold UFC championships in two weight classes simultaneously.
Politically, he is a controversial figure since he has allied himself recently with Donald Trump and in turn, Elon Musk.
Elon Musk came out yesterday on his social media platform X to endorse McGregor in his bid to become the next Irish president but criticised Fine Gael leader Tánaiste Simon Harris for instructing his party’s 246 councillors to block the nomination of potential independent presidential candidates in favour of their own candidate, Heather Humphreys.
Last year, he was lost a civil rape case taken against him by Nikita Hand who accused McGregor of sexually assaulting her in a Dublin Hotel in 2018. In July this year, he also lost his appeal against the court’s ruling.
