Victor Mee's to host two-day convent auction
Victor Mee Auctions is thrilled to put forward a spectacular auction this September.
Taking place over two days on Sunday and Monday, September 28 and 29, the team at the auction house will present a magnificent catalogue of interior and exterior lots from the historical Sisters of Mercy Convent in New Inn, Co Tipperary, along with entries from other notable clientele.
The property operated as the Convent of Mercy for over 130 years from 1879 until its closure in 2012, before being later sold and used as a private residence in the years since.
The convent was once known to be a regular haunt of Eamon de Valera during his time as a teacher at the nearby Rockwell College and his many visits in subsequent years. Local legend has it that, while on the run, de Valera spent time in hiding in the convent, disguised as a priest.
Speaking ahead of the sale, Victor Mee said: “It’s a great honour to be trusted with the contents of such a historical and prominent location as the convent here in New Inn, especially as these types of consignments have become more infrequent in modern times.
"The calibre of the lots here is second to none, with the inclusion of the Rolls-Royce adding significant flair and excitement to the catalogue. We’ve endeavoured and, I think, succeeded in crafting a catalogue to appeal to all kinds of buyers, and we’re very enthused about putting it out there and hosting what’s promising to be a thrilling auction.”
Vintage cars
One of the most exceptional and impressive lots going forward in this sale is a rare Rolls Royce Corniche Hooper-built model.
Appearing as lot 914 in the auction, this vintage car represents the pinnacle of bespoke motoring, combining the elegance of the Corniche with the exclusive craftsmanship of famed coachbuilder Hooper & Co. The model going forward in this auction, according to the vehicle’s registration documents, was formerly owned by Sheikh Abdelaziz bin Ahmed Al Thani of Qatar and goes to auction in the Convent Sale with an estimate of €60,000-€120,000.
Another stunning vintage vehicle appearing is lot 913; a 1992 Bentley Turbo R Automatic, fitted with a powerful 7.6L engine. Now regarded as a modern classic, this example represents an exciting opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike. This one goes to auction with an estimate of just €6,000-€12,000.

A fine Irish Georgian mahogany breakfront bookcase is listed as Lot 312. Measuring nearly three metres wide, the design features four arched glazed doors above four solid panelled doors, all beneath a crisply carved Grecian key pediment. This piece is one of the standout lots in the sale. It is estimated at €3,500-€5,500.
