County rises up the Tidy Towns ranks

Cavan Town has been named the Tidiest Town in County Cavan in this year’s Tidy Towns Awards 2025.

The hard working group also earned a Gold Medal and the Pollinator Award in recognition of its environmental and community initiatives.

“It's been a big effort all round, we're all part of a team,” Paul Lynch said of Cavan town's win at this year's awards 2025.

“We've been waiting for this gold medal for eight or nine years now and we've got it. We need to maintain it. We've also got the county award as well which is brilliant,” he beamed.

“We got a lovely award for pollinator as well, that's credit to the wonderful pollinator planting around town and it's so visual during the summer.

“We're just delighted,” he surmised.

He happily reports that the county “as a whole” has “risen up the ranks” in this year's competition.

“There has been fantastic performances from Shercock, Killeshandra, Mullagh,” he said, explaining the latter had a 20 point increase on their result last year, which is “great for the town”.

“We just want to say thank you to the council for all the support they give us, our volunteers; hundreds of volunteers go out and litter pick around Cavan every week for the benefit of their town and they are instrumental to this.

“On behalf of Cavan Tidy Towns we'd like to thank Cavan Town for a brilliant year but we need to keep it up, we need to keep Cavan where it should be.”

Work for next year's projects in the town are already underway, Paul told the Celt “we started next year three months ago”.

“There's loads of projects underway, we're going to keep working.

“It's not only litter picking, it's pollinator plants, it's biodiversity, it's heritage, it's bulidings, it's streetscapes, they are all the things that we are involved in.”

Paul said they are “open” to anybody with a particular skillset who wants to join the team.

Susan Doherty Administrative Officer with the Environmental Section at Cavan County Council said: “It's a team effort, the Tidy Towns apply for grants, we help fund them in any way we can. Well done to everybody involved.”
