Tesco Virginia brought the inspiring ‘Stronger Starts Cooks’ workshops to St Mary’s National School.

Tesco Virginia, proud to support the local community

Advertorial

Tesco Virginia is now open three months, and the team has been busy supporting the local community groups and charities that matter most in the area.

Thinking back on the last 12 weeks, Store Manager Conor Tully commented: “As I said prior to opening day, we were really looking forward to getting to know everyone and becoming part of the community. We have been really welcomed by the community here in Virginia and it is important that we give back in all the ways that we can”.

Funding local projects

Through the Tesco Community Fund, customers have helped to directly support local groups by voting with blue tokens at the tills. The Tesco Community Fund provides €1,500 in funding to local community organisations every three months. The first beneficiaries were Virginia First Responders, Virginia Rugby Club and St Vincent De Paul which were all nominated by the local community.

The First Responders will use the funding to help pay for AED and ambulance packs, St Vincent de Paul will be able to help more local families, and Virginia Rugby Club plan to use the money to help support youth development.

Championing children’s health

The store is also delighted to have brought Stronger Starts Cooks to St Mary’s National School.

Stronger Starts Cooks is a free educational programme for selected primary schools designed to inspire young learners to engage with food, nutrition, and sustainability in new and exciting ways.

Each participating school receives a fully facilitated, hands-on cooking workshop for up to three classes primarily aimed at 5th class but also open to 4th and 6th classes.

On the workshop day, pupils work in teams to prepare and cook a nutritious hot meal from scratch, learning fundamental cooking skills such as chopping and sautéing, while teachers are supported with lesson plans and materials in advance, enabling them to integrate the workshop into their broader teaching.

Helping those in need

Working with FoodCloud, and over 350 local charitable groups, Tesco redistributes perfectly edible surplus food from its stores at the end of each day to families in need in our communities. Latton Social Services & Development and Olio receive surplus food donations from the Virginia store.
