Parking bye-law review progressing
Councillors will have the opportunity to review the first draft of proposed new parking bye-laws for the county before they are published for public consultation, with a final draft expected by July 2026.
The update was provided at the November monthly meeting by Director of Services Paddy Connaughton, who also confirmed that free parking will return to Cavan Town in the run-up to Christmas and throughout the festive season. The update had been requested by Fianna Fáil’s Áine Smith.
Earlier this year, councillors were informed that key stakeholders - including Strategic Policy Groups, the local Chamber of Commerce, and council members - had all been consulted. Among the proposals under consideration is the possible extension of paid parking zones, including areas around Con Smith Park and Railway Road.
Regarding the proposed changes, Mr Connaughton noted that initial engagements indicated a desire within the business community for greater parking enforcement. Another idea being explored is the introduction of a 20-minute free parking period, aimed at encouraging short visits to the town without causing long-term obstructions.
