Improvements at Castle Lake and better transport links
Aontú Senator Sarah O’Reilly has highlighted major local developments in Bailieborough and surrounding areas, marking two significant achievements in her transition from local councillor to member of Seanad Éireann.
Sen O’Reilly, who was elected to the Agricultural Panel in January 2025 after serving as a councillor for the Bailieborough–Cootehill area since 2016, continues to focus on community-led development and rural connectivity.
As chairperson of the Castle Lake Development Committee, Sen O’Reilly announced that the group has secured €40,000 in funding under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. The grant, approved following an application by the committee, will support an upgrade of the existing 3.5-kilometre walking trail around Castle Lake in Bailieborough.
“The funding will allow for essential drainage and resurfacing of the trail,” Sen O’Reilly outlined. “Castle Lake is a hugely popular local amenity, and this project forms part of our long-term plan to enhance outdoor recreation in the area.”
The Castle Lake Committee works in partnership with Coillte to maintain the forested area surrounding the lake. According to Sen O’Reilly, the latest funding will build on years of voluntary work and community engagement. Construction is due to begin in early 2026, with completion expected by the summer.
Public transport links
Beyond environmental and recreational initiatives, O’Reilly has also been vocal about improving public transport links in east Cavan. Reflecting on her time as a councillor, she recalled initiating a meeting at Cavan County Council five years ago to respond to a lack of transport options in Bailieborough, Shercock and Cootehill.
“At the time, Bailieborough had only one morning bus - for one of the county’s largest towns, that was unacceptable,” Sen O’Reilly felt. “Through community engagement and submissions to the Rural Mobility Implementation Plan, we now have three regular routes - the 170, 172 and 178 - connecting Bailieborough to Dundalk, Cootehill, Virginia, and beyond.”
The expanded Local Link and Bus Éireann services have, she says, transformed daily life in the area. “It’s taken years of work, but the difference is clear. Bailieborough is now the most connected town in Cavan,” she added.
Sen O’Reilly credits collaboration between local groups, Cavan County Council, and the National Transport Authority for the progress - achievements she says demonstrate the value of persistent community advocacy.
