WATCH: Demolition work starts on landmark Erne Palais

New houses could be completed as early as end of next year.

Demolition work has started at the historic Erne Palais ballroom, extensively damaged by fire in 2018, but for which there are now plans to develop the site into a new housing complex.

While work started on preparing the site back in October, demolition of the rear of the former cinema and dancehall last week, with building plans designed around retaining and restoring the iconic front façade of the original structure.

It is expected that the seven new housing units earmarked for the property could be completed as early as Q4 2026.

Originally built in 1947, the Erne Palais began life as a cinema before becoming one of the region’s most popular ballrooms. It later served as a community centre but eventually fell into disuse.

A devastating arson attack in September 2018 reduced the protected structure to ruins.

The incident remains under investigation, with no arrests made to date.

In June 2021, planning was granted to Erne Palais Ltd, and the approved plans which overcame appeal, include converting around 30% of the existing building footprint into two apartments.

The remainder of the site will see the construction of three terraced houses and two bungalow-style homes.

The project is being undertaken on behalf of Cavan County Council.
