Plenty to celebrate in Cavan – Cllr Walsh

It has been another successful year in Cavan according to Cllr Patricia Walsh, who praised a number of initiatives within the county town.

In particular, the Fianna Fáil representative welcomed the funding allocated to the Regional Sports Complex project, and looks forward to seeing this come to fruition. The facility, which will be located adjacent from Breffni Park, received a €15 million funding injection in October, and is being progressed by Cavan County Council in partnership with Cavan GAA and the Royal School.

The project site is a 28-hectare parcel of land, zoned for sport/recreation and public/community, located between Breffni Park and The Royal School, Cavan.

Once complete, it will provide a covered sports arena with playing pitch, spectator seating, and other ancillary accommodation. The sports centre building will have changing facilities, multi-purpose rooms, reception and ancillary accommodation.

The project also includes four GAA fields, a synthetic hockey/ multi-sport pitch, cricket practice area/catch nets and all facilities with lighting.

Cllr Walsh also praised the number of housing developments constructed in Cavan town this year; 23 units under the Housing for All programme, while 72 new units in the town have made significant progress.

Driving through the town, you can’t but notice the fabulous new lights shining over mainstreet. Cllr Walsh had abundant praise for the “very active” Chamber of Commerce and the hard work they do all year round.

She encouraged people to shop local this Christmas, and praised the number of long-standing and new businesses that Cavan town has to offer including the new Cavan Town gift card.

On the GAA scene, the Gaels are Ulster Ladies Junior Football champions for the first time, something Cllr Walsh said gave a “great boost” to the town. She shared her congratulations to the team and the hard work they put in this year.

While there has been a lot of “good work” done to provide facilties for young people in Cavan, Cllr Walsh said providing “more” such areas for the youth would be something she’d like to see next year.

Cllr Patricia Walsh wished everybody a peaceful Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year.
