Better engagement regarding IPAS centres sought

The recent situation in Kilnaleck whereby a number of families living in the International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) were moved with “a few days’ notice” was discussed at the December meeting of Cavan County Council.

Cllr Trevor Smith called for “better public engagement” from the Minister for Justice with regards to families living in IPAS centres. The families in Kilnaleck were “relocated” with just a “few days’ notice”, according to Cllr Smith, something which sparked a “large public meeting” in the area. The Fine Gael man made a call for “better public engagement in relation to changes” in situations at IPAS centres.

Cllr Noel Connell (SF) supported the motion. He said the families had “integrated really well” within the community and in the schools there.

He said the situation was “poorly” handled and that the families were given “relocation areas all over the country”. He also said people “should be given updates”.

Meanwhile, Cllr T.P. O’Reilly said a “big shape up” is needed within IPAS centres, and called for “more clarity”.

Party colleague Winston Bennett also supported the motion, adding that the “same thing” happened at Crosskeys a few months ago. He said the situation would be “different” if the families were going home.
