€1.2M in speeding fines
SOME €1.2M in speeding fines were generated by Garda speed van operators in Cavan and Monaghan over a 30-month period. The figures were released by Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, who is calling for a get-tough approach to those caught speeding excessively on rural roads.
School secretaries on strike
School secretaries across the county have vowed to remain on indefinite strike until they are awarded pension parity and the same holiday entitlements as teachers and SNAs. The strike action by Forsa union members, left teachers and parents struggling to cope with a range of issues as schools reopened for the new academic year. Protests were staged all over the county as the dispute continued. These included separate demonstrations outside the offices of both Cavan Fianna Fáil TDs.
Cavan man dies in Perth
The FAMILY of a young Cavan man were preparing to fly out to Australia to bring his body home after he tragically died whilst out jogging. Jamie Colburne, who only turned 26 in August, died in Perth where he had been living and working. “It was sudden and quick, no crime or accident involved, he just collapsed while out jogging on Wednesday, August 27. We are all beyond heartbroken,” said his family in a statement.
‘Little warrior’ laid to rest
LITTLE blue hero Leon Briody was laid to rest on Sunday, September 15, following his brave battle with cancer. His funeral mass was celebrated at St Patrick’s Church in his home parish of Castletara, where members of An Garda Síochána formed a guard of honour at the entrance to the church, joined by other members of the community.
Mother calls for signage at lake where son died
A HEARTBROKEN mother has called for signage and a safety audit at a lake, which claimed her son’s life, in order to prevent another fatality. Debbie Powderly called for the risk assessment to be carried out at Lough Ramor in Virginia, because she doesn’t want another mother to go through the same devastation she and her family are suffering.
Fire treated as suspicious
GARDAÍ were treating a fire, which broke out at the former Bent Elbow pub as suspicious. They confirmed the blaze was being investigated as criminal damage. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 4am on Sunday, September 7, following reports of a vehicle on fire at the site. Fire crews from Ballyjamesduff and Cavan Town responded quickly, only to discover the flames had already spread from the vehicle to the adjacent building.
Humphreys promises honesty, service not perfection
Heather Humphreys has been selected by Fine Gael to run for President. Official confirmation of her party’s nomination came after the Fine Gael party’s deadline of September 2 for the close of nominations expired.
Speaking immediately after she secured her party’s support, the woman from Drum said she “loves this country, which made me everything I am”. While “not promising perfection”, she pledged “honesty, compassion and service” if elected the next President of Ireland.
