Reasons to be optimistic for 2026
Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for State, Niamh Smyth.
My reflections over 2025 are an assortment of local issues and achievements to the important national items that will impact our lives long term.
A real standout moment was last Saturday week when the wonderful Knockbride Ladies’ won the All-Ireland Intermediate title. To experience in real time the pride, passion and excitement they brought to the parish, county and wider afield was amazing. To each player in the squad, to every member of the management team and to club officers and committee I say, “A huge Thank You and what a way to celebrate the fading embers of 2025.” I was really pleased that the sale of Wellman International through delicate, skilful, and respectful negotiations resulted in its buy out by UG Group. This fair progressive deal has brought certainty and stability to the workforce and the plant’s future. This ambitious company is bringing capital investment, expertise in cleantech and waste management and the potential to grow the plant into a European champion while making the world a cleaner place. I thank the IDA and my department officials in securing its future in Mullagh and sustaining employment for the local economy. Running side by side with the work of UG Group is my commitment to promote a cleaner, healthier environment with sustainability the primary focus. As a nation and as individuals we all have a responsibility to protect our common home and to acknowledge earth’s cries for help. Through our personal actions we are safeguarding our children’s and grandchildren’s futures on planet earth and keeping the drive of Greta Thunberg alive. We must all do our bit for climate change and our environment and interpret new weather freaks like Storm Éowyn as the warning shots. The official opening of the new Garda Station in Bailieborough in 2026 will assist in revitalising the Main Street and adding to a greater garda presence in our town. It will become an important policing centre housing over 60 garda with civilian staff adding to its role as an employer.
The continued financial funding of SMEs towards improved digitalisation of workforces and growth in the sector will be my top priority in the year ahead. They are the backbone of our economy, driving innovation and job creation, identifying gaps and adapting new tech faster than larger firms and providing specialised services or materials to larger enterprises. They are our future. My enduring wish for 2026 is that you and your family enjoy personal contentment, good health and cherished moments and memories.
