Progress on Carrick Workhouse

Plans to redevelop the historic Carrickmacross Workhouse into a Community, Tourism and Arts Hub are progressing, following the completion of the public consultation process.

Monaghan County Council is reviewing the outcomes of the consultation and anticipates the detailed design and Bill of Quantities will be completed by the end of March, 2026.

The local authority secured funding under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF) to advance the redevelopment of the six-acre campus, with Cooney Architects appointed to prepare the planning application.

The workhouse campus, which was purchased by Monaghan County Council in 2019, currently accommodates 28 community groups and services and is seen as a vital community, educational and social hub.

The council’s vision, in partnership with Farney Community Development Group (FCDG), is to fully restore the site, safeguard its heritage, and transform it into a multi-purpose facility serving the south Monaghan region.

Over €2.2M has already been invested in the workhouse over the past 20 years through PEACE, INTERREG, LEADER and the International Fund for Ireland.

The proposed new hub aims, it’s hoped, will also act as a catalyst for private sector investment, supporting local accommodation, hospitality and tourism businesses.
